Sri Lanka has always been an island blessed with beautiful coastlines. If you travel around our small country, you’ll quickly realize that beaches are part of everyday life here. Fishermen return with their boats at sunrise, children play cricket on the sand in the evening, and travelers sit quietly watching the sunset with a coconut in hand.
So it made many of us locals very happy when two of our beloved beaches were recognized among the best in Asia.
Recently, Tripadvisor released its Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best Beaches, and two Sri Lankan beaches earned places on the list of Asia’s top coastal destinations. Mirissa Beach ranked 5th, while Bentota Beach came in at 7th place.
For a small island like Sri Lanka, this is something truly special.
Let me share a little about these two places from a local perspective, because many travelers who visit Sri Lanka often fall in love with these beaches for very personal reasons.
Mirissa Beach – A Place Where Adventure Meets Peace
Mirissa Beach is located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, not far from the historic town of Galle.
Many travelers first hear about Mirissa because of whale watching, but the beach itself has its own magic.
I remember the first time I visited Mirissa many years ago. Early morning. The ocean was calm, and fishermen were pulling their colorful boats onto the sand. A few travelers were walking slowly along the shore, enjoying the quiet.
Mirissa has a long curve of golden sand with clear blue water. Near the rock formations, the sea is usually calm enough for swimming. Families love this area because the water is gentle and safe most days.
In the center of the beach, the waves become stronger. This is where surfers gather.
One famous wave here is called “Mirissa Right.” Surfers from around the world come to ride it. You’ll often see boards resting in the sand while surfers wait patiently for the next good wave.
But Mirissa is not only about surfing.
During the day, people relax under palm trees, read books, or simply listen to the sound of the ocean. By late afternoon, the entire beach slowly changes mood.
Restaurants start preparing fresh seafood. The smell of grilled fish and prawns fills the air. Lanterns light up along the beach. Music begins playing softly from small beach bars.
And then comes the sunset.
Many travelers walk to Coconut Tree Hill, a small hill covered with palm trees overlooking the ocean. From there, the sunset looks almost unreal — orange sky, dark silhouettes of palm trees, and waves moving endlessly below.
Many guests who stay near Mirissa tell me this sunset is one of their favorite memories in Sri Lanka.
If you’re planning a trip, it’s helpful to check accommodation and local tours in advance through trusted platforms like Booking.com, especially during the busy travel season.
Bentota Beach – Sri Lanka’s Water Sports Paradise
Further north along the southwest coast lies another beautiful destination: Bentota Beach.
Bentota feels very different from Mirissa.
While Mirissa has a relaxed backpacker vibe, Bentota is known for its luxury resorts, wide open beaches, and water sports.
The sand here is soft and pale, stretching for a long distance along the coast. It’s the kind of beach where you can walk for a long time without feeling crowded.
But the biggest attraction in Bentota is adventure.
Travelers come here for activities like:
-
Jet skiing
-
Kitesurfing
-
Banana boat rides
-
Windsurfing
The nearby Bentota Lagoon also offers calm waters perfect for boat rides and mangrove tours.
I’ve met many travelers who tried jet skiing here for the first time and couldn’t stop talking about the experience afterward. The speed, the ocean spray, and the open coastline make it an unforgettable activity.
But Bentota also has its peaceful side.
In the evening, the beach becomes very quiet. Couples walk along the shoreline while watching the sun slowly disappear into the Indian Ocean.
Many visitors say the sunsets in Bentota are some of the most beautiful they’ve ever seen.
And honestly, I agree.
Why the Travelers’ Choice Awards Matter
The Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards are not chosen by a small panel of judges.
They are based on real traveler experiences.
According to Tripadvisor, the Best of the Best award represents its highest level of recognition. It is given to destinations that receive a large number of excellent reviews and ratings over a 12-month period.
What makes this award especially impressive is how competitive it is.
Out of more than eight million listings on the platform, less than one percent receive this recognition.
So when two Sri Lankan beaches appear on the list, it shows how strongly travelers connect with the island’s natural beauty.
Asia’s Top Beach This Year
While Sri Lanka celebrated its two rankings, the number one beach in Asia this year went to Banana Beach in Phuket.
Still, being ranked among Asia’s best is something Sri Lankans feel proud about.
Our beaches may not always be as famous as some others in the region, but visitors often say they feel more natural, more relaxed, and less crowded.
And sometimes that makes all the difference.
Why Travelers Keep Falling in Love With Sri Lanka’s Beaches
From my experience hosting travelers in Sri Lanka, people rarely come here only for one beach.
They travel across the island.
They explore ancient cities, climb rock fortresses, visit temples, and then finally relax by the sea.
But when they reach the coast, something changes.
They slow down.
They start waking up early to watch the sunrise. They sit longer during sunset. They talk with fishermen. They try fresh seafood cooked just a few meters from the ocean.
And that’s when Sri Lanka truly begins to feel special.
Places like Mirissa Beach and Bentota Beach are not just beautiful because of their scenery.
They’re beautiful because of the experiences people have there.
Final Thoughts From a Local
When international platforms like Tripadvisor recognize Sri Lankan destinations, it reminds the world that this small island still holds many treasures.
But honestly, if you ask most travelers who visit Sri Lanka, they will tell you something interesting.
The best places are often the ones they didn’t expect.
A quiet sunset. A small beach restaurant. A morning swim before the crowds arrive.
That’s the real Sri Lanka.
And if you ever visit, take time to explore both Mirissa Beach and Bentota Beach.
Walk slowly. Stay for sunset. Talk with locals.
You might discover why so many travelers leave the island already planning their next visit.
